The world has gone bonkers over Viagra! Late night comedians Jay Leno and David Letterman have a new Viagra joke every night, the news media has run countless stories, it has burst upon the American landscape like a 500 foot tidal wave. Lets take a look at this “wonder drug”.

WHAT IS IT? HOW DOES IT WORK?

Viagra is the first medication that research shows to be effective in helping men achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra is a drug and can only be purchased with a prescription from a doctor Viagra (the generic name is sildenafil citrate www.viagrasoft.org) is a medication that blocks the action of the type 5 phosphodiesterase enzyme (PDE). This enzyme, in turn, promotes the accumulation of cyclic guanosine

The Potency Pill

monophosphate (cGMP), a compound that causes a reduction in the amount of calcium within a muscle cell. This, in turn, results in relaxation of that muscle cell and promotes penile erection. The more cGMP inside the cell the better and erection will be. However cGMP is broken down by the PDE5 enzyme, which is available in large supply in the penis. This is why Viagra’s ability to block the action of PDE5 is so essential. The drug allows the accumulation of cGMP, which permits and erection to develop and be maintained. Arousal must occur before Viagra will work.

The first book touting Viagra was written by Steven Lamm, M.D. This has caused concern because he also wrote the first book touting the now banned diet combination Phen-Fen.

VIAGRA BY THE NUMBERS

In studies involving 4,000 men (including former Senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole) ranging in age from 19 to 87 years who had erectile dysfunction of various causes. The results were very promising when compared to a placebo (a sugar pill that does not contain any medication). The results showed that Viagra improved erections for 63 percent of the men taking 25mg, 74 percent of the men taking 50mg, and 82 percent of the men taking 100mg. The data indicates that Viagra is an effective form of treatment for a wide range of erectile dysfunction causes. Interestingly, the only area in which Viagra demonstrated no significant improvement was that of sexual desire. It is clear that this drug is not an aphrodisiac.

SIDE EFFECTS – NIGHTMARE IN THE BEDROOM SUITE

Viagra has shown that it can cause some very serious side effects. The likelyhood of a side effect increases as the dosage gets stronger. In other words, the chances of suffering side effects is much greater with 100mg than 25mg. These side effects include, severe headaches, dizziness or loss of balance, complete blackouts, abnormal vision: seeing a blue-green aura everywhere, indigestion, nasal problems, coital coronaries and most frightening, death. While the deaths associated with Viagra have generated most of the headline the most common side effect reported are the devastating headaches and blackouts. No one know the long-term effects of large doses of Viagra, or repeated use over time.

HOW SHOULD VIAGRA BE USED

Viagra comes in three different doses: 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg. The standard starting dose is 50mg and should be taken approximately one hour before sexual activity. Viagra has been shown to induce erection between 30 minutes and 4 hours after it is taken. Viagra works best when taken on an empty stomach. A full stomach will diminish or even negate the effects. Alcohol, however, has no impact on Viagra’s effectiveness.

VIAGRA CASUALTY

Bob Howorth rushed right out and tried Viagra shortly after it was available. During sexual intercourse with his wife he suffered a massive heart attack and died. Many others have suffered the same fate. If you have any sort of heart condition make sure you consult with your doctor before trying Viagra.

In the final analysis, despite the obvious risks, Viagra is an incredible positive development for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. It is not a magic pill, it will not solve all problems and has side effects, but Viagra is a winner.
